Necromedia in Theory and Practice
Morgridge International Reading Center
Necromedia, which Marcel O’Gorman defines as "the collusion of death and technology," is the primary topic of this lively and provocative presentation. Working through various projects developed in the Critical Media Lab, O’Gorman will provide a philosophical discussion of technocultural being, focusing primarily on what it means to be a finite creature in a culture dominated by rhetorics of infinitude and immortality. Posthumanist philosophy meets homemade retro arcade cabinets, penny farthing bicycles, canoes, and a computer-equipped coffin, in a research method O’Gorman calls "applied media theory," a mode of humanities scholarship designed to intervene in the production of digital culture.
