The Wounded Warrior Adaptive Sports Camp Showcases American Heroes Interacting with Knights
The eight-day camp at the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center includes wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball featuring United States Marines hurt in action

Orlando, FL (September 11, 2012) – The University of Central Florida’s Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) is continuing its commitment to inclusive environment for students and people of all abilities by hosting its first ever, Wounded Warrior Adaptive Sports Camp. The camp features 100 Marines from the United States Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment in Quantico, Virginia. The Regiment provides non-medical assistance to wounded, ill or injured Marines and sailors as well as their families, during the soldier’s transition from military to civilian life.

The Marines will spend more than a week at the RWC’s Multipurpose Activities Court or MAC Gym practicing wheel chair basketball and sitting volleyball. Sitting Volleyball is a Paralympic sport where the participants sit to play. The wheelchair basketball sessions will end with a “friendly” scrimmage games Friday, September 14 at 7pm against the Orlando Magic’s professional wheel chair team, the Magic Wheels. This scrimmage is open to the public. The Sitting Volleyball Sessions include free clinics for UCF students of all abilities on Monday, September 17 at 3:00pm and Tuesday, September 18 at 10am. The RWC will host its first ever Sitting Volleyball Tournament later this month on September 22. Here is a closer look at the schedule of events:

The UCF Veterans Academic Resource Center will have representatives on hand during this week’s events. UCF Athletics also donated 100 tickets to the Marines to attend the home football opener Saturday, September 15 against Florida International University.
