Debates about US foreign policy have revolved around three main traditions—liberal internationalism, realism, and nationalism. American presidents tend to swing back and forth between these main traditions. Today, nationalists and realists are winning the debate. Professor Nau revives a fourth tradition, which he calls “conservative internationalism.” This approach embraces freedom, like liberal internationalism; arms diplomacy, like realism; and preserves national sovereignty, like nationalism. Does conservative internationalism offer an alternative way to pull back? What does it mean for US policy in Asia?
