Film Screening: "A Force in Nature: Jóhann Eyfells"

Wednesday, October 25, 2017 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

The Orlando Film Festival presents a screening of a documentary about Jóhann Eyfells, the first sculptor on the faculty at the University of Central Florida (then Florida Technological University).

A Force in Nature is a self-reflective journey of a 93 year-old Icelandic man in Texas. Jóhann Eyfells, through his genuine candor reveals the forces that shaped his life as an artist. The story reveals the struggles that an artist must face when he is not understood by his own community, and the difficult choices one must endure every day to remain true to one’s own nature. It is a story that explores what it means to be successful as an artist. It is also a story of a profound love between two very strong and independent individuals, and the devotion they had for one another. It is also a story of reconciliation between him and his family that he left behind in Iceland.

Jóhann Eyfells is a sculptor born in Reykjavík, but has spent most of his working life in the United States. He works with huge, heavy pieces of stone, steel and wood. His theory of art is called receptualism and Johann is mostly concerned with the interaction of gravity, time and space. He has worked consistently and steadily for over six decades.
