The term “coastal” defines more than just the outline of a state. The majority of Floridians would consider themselves to be coastal residents and nearly 16 million of us live in counties just a few feet above sea level. But one would argue that all of us should consider ourselves as being coastal citizens, even those in the interior of the State.

Coastal includes how far inland the marine environment influences and how far offshore the terrestrial environment influences. This equates to areas of up to 100 miles inland and would put Orlando under coastal influence. So if all of Florida is coastal, and all Floridians are coastal citizens, then all of us need to be concerned about coastal issues because, conversely, we’re all contributing to coastal problems.
