Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor the history and culture of Hispanic and Latino Americans, and to recognize their contributions to the United States. First observed in 1968, the celebration initially lasted seven days. On August 17, 1988, the Reagan Administration enacted a law extending the festivities to thirty days.

September 15 is a significant date in Latin American history, resulting in the observance's unusual mid-month time frame. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua all celebrate their independence on that day, with this year marking the 195th anniversary. Belize, Chile and Mexico also celebrate their independence within the subsequent week, on September 21, September 18 and September 16 respectively.
