Leadership Week: Your Tomorrow, Today

Friday, February 23, 2018 11 a.m. to noon

Speaker: Tyler Lose

One of the primary characteristics of a leader is envisioning goals and understanding the steps necessary to achieve those goals. When we were younger we all had big goals, either to be the president or an astronaut or maybe even a celebrity. College seems to be the time in a person’s life when those goals begin to diminish. As reality and adulthood set in many begin to believe their goals are impossible. Sometimes, however, the way to achieve those goals is to simply keep them in sight. The workshop I propose would allow students the opportunity to envision and live out the positive impact of achieving those goals, no matter how unattainable they may seem.

The workshop would be a mock version of a high school reunion, in which students would write their names and their dream job on a nametag. For the rest of the workshop, the students would take on the persona associated with a future version of themselves that has achieved the previously stated dream. This role-play exercise allows the student to palpably envision their goals, while building the confidence and charisma they may need to achieve that goal. The event would also allow them to sharpen their communication, creativity, and collaboration skills; all are essential in leadership. A casual approach to the subject of leadership allows us to close the gap of inconceivability.
