Dr. Tosha Dupras - Living on the Fringe: Bioarchaeological Investigations in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt

Popular cultural and mass media has paid homage to the great pharaohs and monumental architecture of ancient Egypt, but little is known about the common people of ancient Egypt. Excavations in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt have allowed for an unprecedented examination of life and death in ancient Egypt during the Roman period of occupation (circa 50 AD to 450 AD). The burial practices and remarkable preservation of the desert sands has preserved the architecture, cultural and physical remains of the people who once lived there. This presentation will summarize the archaeological excavations and analyses of the people who lived in the Dakhleh Oasis, allowing us to interpret and understand how people lived in such a harsh environment.
