]]>Following the presentation, we will give a brief tour of the Doctor Phillips Nursing Pavilion so you can view the state-of-the-art labs and simulation spaces that foster innovation and enhance nursing education for Knight Nurses.
UCF’s BSN Information Sessions are designed to help prospective BSN students understand the process and steps for applying to UCF's limited-access, upper-division BSN programs, which include the traditional, second degree and concurrent options. The online RN to BSN option will also be discussed. Attendees will learn about unique application requirements to practice and learn in clinical sites, prerequisite courses and grade requirements and other helpful information. This information session is open to anyone interested in applying to UCF College of Nursing's BSN program.
Attendance is not required of applicants, but it is encouraged. Attendees should plan to arrive early and stay for the entire presentation, which will last about one hour, followed by a question-and-answer session. There will be limited availability for one-on-one advising after the session.

]]>Professor Junping Shi from College of William & Mary will speak at this week's colloquium on "Reaction-diffusion models for animal movement with spatial memory and nonlocal advection."
Abstract: Animal populations often self-organize into territorial structure from movements and interactions of individual animals. Spatial memory is one of the cognitive processes that may affect the movement and navigation of the animals. We will review several mathematical approaches of animal spatial movements: (i) reaction-diffusion-advection model with time-delayed memory-based movement; and (ii) reaction-diffusion-advection model with a non-local advection term driven by a cognitive map representing memory of past animal locations embedded in the environment. The well-posedness of models and bifurcation of spatiotemporal patterns will be discussed.
Speaker Bio: Junping Shi is a Professor of Mathematics at the College of William & Mary. He studied mathematics at Nankai University of China from 1990 to 1993 and received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Brigham Young University in 1998. His research areas include nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations, bifurcation theory, and mathematical biology. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) since 2003. Dr. Shi served as Chair of the Mathematics Department at William & Mary in 2018-2022 and also in 2025, and he was the director of William & Mary NSF EXTREEMS-QED program in 2013-2019. He has published more than 190 papers which have been cited more than 11000 times on Google Scholar.

Since 2018, Amanda Leigh Evans has been collecting raw materials (photos, rocks, soils, pressings, and archival images) from Superfund sites she visits throughout the United States. A Superfund site is designated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a polluted location that requires long-term cleanup of hazardous material contamination, and their collection is made with the utmost caution.
Approximately 78 million people (roughly 24% of the U.S. population) live within 3 miles of a Superfund site, yet many are unaware of the dangers these sites pose. Invisible threats to human and ecological health are often not visually apparent when walking or driving past these sites. To live in the 21st Century is to reckon with our proximity and complicity with the ongoing creation of these sites.
Evan’s exhibition features ceramic sculpture, collected raw materials, large-format collage images, and research materials from several Superfund sites she has visited over the years. The project began when the artist discovered that her maternal family, which has chronic and neurological health issues, was raised on the Bunker Hill Mine Superfund Site in Northern Idaho, one of the nation’s largest and most complex Superfund sites in the United States.

As we hike through one of Georgia’s most iconic mountain corridors, we’ll soak in crisp spring air, learn backcountry skills, and settle into camp under the stars. Whether it’s your first overnight trip or you’re a seasoned backpacker, Pine Mountain offers an unforgettable weekend escape.

What’s Included: All of our adventures include all necessary gear for the activity (including camping gear and backpacks), transportation to/from the activity, and professional guidance by OA Trip Leaders. All staff are certified in First Aid/CPR/AED, and most are certified Wilderness First Responders. Meals will be provided on this trip; all menus will take dietary restrictions/preferences and allergies into account. Occasionally, groups will eat at restaurants while traveling. These meals are not included in your trip cost. Your Trip Leaders will inform you of any meals not included in the trip price.

]]>UCF's Space Kids Innovation Challenge provides ALL students from ALL disciplines with an opportunity to address an important real-world problem, design creative solutions and pitch winning proposals to space industry leaders. Participants have an opportunity to earn cash awards, add credentials and make professional connections in an emerging industry sector.
Space Kids is challenging UCF students with developing workforce development programs/solutions that target age ranges, including K-8, high school, collegiate or adult education, as follows:
Propose an innovative, scalable, learning and skill development program/solution that is likely to improve the quality and quantity of talent available in the commercial aerospace and adjacent space ecosystem workforce pipeline. Please join United Abolitionists, Inc. and UCF’s Center for the Study of Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery for the 18th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Conference. This hybrid conference brings together survivors, lived-experience leaders, advocates, technologists, researchers and policymakers to confront the growing role of technology in driving human trafficking. We will identify innovative strategies, policy reforms, and tech-based interventions that protect vulnerable populations, disrupt exploitative networks, and empower survivors to lead systemic change. This is more than a conversation; it’s a movement to rewrite the algorithm and reclaim the digital space for safety, justice and freedom.
We’re collecting essential hygiene items to support survivors of human trafficking as part of the 18th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Conference. Donations will be received on the day of the event. Since 2018, Amanda Leigh Evans has been collecting raw materials (photos, rocks, soils, pressings, and archival images) from Superfund sites she visits throughout the United States. A Superfund site is designated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a polluted location that requires long-term cleanup of hazardous material contamination, and their collection is made with the utmost caution.
Approximately 78 million people (roughly 24% of the U.S. population) live within 3 miles of a Superfund site, yet many are unaware of the dangers these sites pose. Invisible threats to human and ecological health are often not visually apparent when walking or driving past these sites. To live in the 21st Century is to reckon with our proximity and complicity with the ongoing creation of these sites.
Evan’s exhibition features ceramic sculpture, collected raw materials, large-format collage images, and research materials from several Superfund sites she has visited over the years. The project began when the artist discovered that her maternal family, which has chronic and neurological health issues, was raised on the Bunker Hill Mine Superfund Site in Northern Idaho, one of the nation’s largest and most complex Superfund sites in the United States.

]]>Abstract: Quantum-engineered intersubband transitions in n-doped multiple-quantum-well heterostructures allow one to produce semiconductor films with very large nonlinear optical response. This nonlinear response can be further enhanced by processing semiconductor heterostructures as metasurfaces in which intersubband transitions are coupled to optical modes of the metasurface nanoresonators [1]. As a result, one can fabricate large area optically thin films that display second- and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility values 4-7 orders of magnitude higher than that of traditional nonlinear optical crystals. Using these films, one can achieve efficient (0.1-1%) frequency mixing at moderate pumping intensities (10-100 kW/cm) without phase-matching constraints associated with bulk nonlinear optical crystals [2,3]. In this presentation, I will discuss our recent advancements with these metasurfaces, focusing on dynamic electrical phase control of the nonlinear optical response at the individual nanoresonator level [4,5] and on efficient continuous-wave terahertz generation with unprecedented tuning range of 1-11 THz via difference-frequency mixing [6].

About the Speaker: Mikhail A. Belkin is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Technical University of Munich and the head of the Chair for Semiconductor Technology at the Walter Schottky Institute of the Technical University of Munich. Previously, he was a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. His research interests are in the field of mid-infrared and THz optoelectronics, integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, and metamaterials.
Dr. Belkin received his Ph.D. degrees in Physics at the University of California at Berkeley in the group of Prof. Yuen-Ron Shen in 2004 and did his postdoctoral work at the group of Prof. Federico Capasso at Harvard University in 2004-2008. His recognitions include Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2016), NSF CAREER Award (2012), DARPA Young Faculty Award (2012), and AFOSR Young Investigator Program Award (2009). Dr. Belkin is a Fellow of the IEEE, OSA and SPIE.

]]>Outdoor Adventure is proud to partner with Ranger Rick's SCUBA Adventure, one of the most experienced scuba dive outfitters, for our entry-level NAUI SCUBA certification course. This course is available to students currently enrolled at UCF.
Upon successful completion of this course and checkout dives, graduates are considered competent to engage in open-water diving activities without supervision, provided the diving activities and areas dived approximate those in training. No previous SCUBA experience is required; however, basic swimming skills are necessary to complete the course.
Cost
The total cost of the certification is $380, with $40 due at registration. The rest of the price is due the first weekend of the certification, paid to Ranger Rick SCUBA Adventures. If you pay by card, there is an additional $5 fee, bringing the total to $385.
Schedule
To receive SCUBA certification, participants must complete two consecutive weekends of training. The first weekend includes classroom work and pool practice dives. Normally, the first weekend includes Friday night, all day Saturday and all day Sunday. For the second weekend, our instructor will pick either Saturday or Sunday to complete the Open Water Dives.

Open Water Dives
During the second weekend of the certification, students can complete their open-water dives. These dives take place either at Devil’s Den, Blue Grotto, KP Hole or Blue Heron Bridge. This is a full-day commitment. Transportation is not included.
Equipment
A SCUBA-quality mask, snorkel, wetsuit, fins and SCUBA booties are the student's responsibility to bring to all dive sessions. These pieces can be rented through the Outdoor Adventure Center and are included in the course fee. This equipment is subject to availability. All other equipment and materials are provided by Ranger Rick SCUBA Adventures.

Strengthening Systems Coherence to Improve Learning: The Case of Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar Reform
Abstract:
Despite expanded access to primary education, learning outcomes in many low- and middle-income countries remain low, reflecting education systems that prioritize compliance and administration over learning. Reforms often fail because they do not realign the accountability structures shaping school and teacher behavior. This study analyzes Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar reform as a systemic attempt to address this problem, using the RISE Systems Coherence Framework. The reform strengthened coherence within the state–provider accountability relationship but achieved more limited alignment across political, managerial and voice dimensions, largely improving information while leaving other elements misaligned. This partial coherence led to wide variation in school implementation and learning outcomes. The study underscores both the promise and the limits of strengthening systems coherence for learning in large, decentralized education systems.

Can Curriculum Reform in a Low-Performing, Decentralized Education System Improve Student Learning? Evidence from a National School Panel in Indonesia
Abstract:
This study examines Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar reform using a difference-in-differences design and data from 27,032 primary schools to compare literacy and numeracy gains between early and later adopters of the new curriculum. Early adopters experienced significantly larger gains in literacy (0.22 SD) and numeracy (0.29 SD). Effects were stronger in rural than urban schools, narrowing rural–urban learning gaps, while numeracy gains were not significant in lower-SES schools. Overall, the findings suggest that curriculum reform can lead to meaningful learning gains, though equity challenges remain.

]]>Professor Annalisa Calini from College of Charleston will speak at this week's colloquium on "Soliton equations and geometric flows for Legendrian and transverse curves in the 3-sphere."
Abstract:
I will begin with two canonical examples of integrable geometric flows for curves—the vortex filament flow in Euclidean geometry and the NLS equation, and Pinkall’s flow in centro-affine geometry and the KdV equation—highlighting the role of moving frames in integrability.
In the rest of the talk, I will focus on Legendrian and transverse curves in the 3-sphere endowed with the standard contact structure, and describe how a well-known integrable model of short wave-long wave interaction arises from a simple geometric flow on transverse curves.
This talk is based on recent work with Tom Ivey (College of Charleston) and a long-standing collaboration with Emilio Musso (Politecnico di Torino, Italy).
Speaker Bio: Annalisa Calini received her Laurea in Physics from the Uni- versity of Milano, Italy, and her Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Arizona. She is a Professor of Mathematics at the College of Charleston, where she has served on the faculty for many years. She has held appointments as Program Officer in Applied Mathematics at the National Science Foundation and currently serves as Deputy Editor of Studies in Applied Mathematics.

UCF’s BSN Information Sessions are designed to help prospective BSN students understand the process and steps for applying to UCF's limited-access, upper-division BSN programs, which include the traditional, second degree and concurrent options. Since 2018, Amanda Leigh Evans has been collecting raw materials (photos, rocks, soils, pressings, and archival images) from Superfund sites she visits throughout the United States. A Superfund site is designated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a polluted location that requires long-term cleanup of hazardous material contamination, and their collection is made with the utmost caution.
Approximately 78 million people (roughly 24% of the U.S. population) live within 3 miles of a Superfund site, yet many are unaware of the dangers these sites pose. Invisible threats to human and ecological health are often not visually apparent when walking or driving past these sites. To live in the 21st Century is to reckon with our proximity and complicity with the ongoing creation of these sites.
Evan’s exhibition features ceramic sculpture, collected raw materials, large-format collage images, and research materials from several Superfund sites she has visited over the years. The project began when the artist discovered that her maternal family, which has chronic and neurological health issues, was raised on the Bunker Hill Mine Superfund Site in Northern Idaho, one of the nation’s largest and most complex Superfund sites in the United States.

]]>Abstract: Point defects in crystals are the solid-state analog to trapped ions. Thus these “quantum defects”, which can be integrated into solid-state devices, have gained interest as quantum sensors and qubit candidates for scalable quantum networks. In this talk, I will introduce some of the basic quantum defect properties desirable for quantum technologies. I will highlight my own group’s efforts at understanding and controlling the properties of defects in diamond including (1) synthesis, frequency and emission control of deep-level vacancy complexes in diamond and (2) properties of shallow-level donors in ZnO, including single donors and intentionally synthesized donors in ZnO.
About the Speaker: Kai-Mei Fu is the Virginia and Prentice Bloedel Professor of Physics and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington and holds a dual appointment with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Kai-Mei received their PhD in Applied Physics in 2007 from Stanford University. Their research focuses on the synthesis, characterization and control of optically active quantum defects in crystals, with applications in quantum networks and sensing. At UW, Kai-Mei is the Director of UW’s NSF National Research Training Program: Accelerating Quantum-Enabled Technologies. They serve as the Deputy Director of the Department of Energy National Quantum Initiative (NQI) Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage.

About the Artists
Lindsay Garritson is an internationally active pianist who has performed throughout the United States and abroad since the age of four, appearing in major venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Place des Arts in Montreal. She has been featured as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Métropolitain (Montreal), and Orquestra Sinfônica Barra Mansa in Brazil. An award-winning artist, she has received top prizes at the Montreal International Piano Competition, the USASU Bösendorfer International Piano Competition, and the Mozarteum International Chopin Competition in Salzburg, and recently completed a five-city solo recital tour in China. A passionate advocate for new music, her Carnegie Hall debut featured the world premiere of Carl Vine’s Piano Sonata No. 4, written for her, coinciding with the release of her solo album Aphorisms: Piano Music of Carl Vine. She holds degrees from Principia College, the Yale School of Music, and the University of Miami, and is currently a visiting assistant professor of piano at the University of Central Florida.
Michael Hill, a graduate of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, is a former member of professional orchestras in both Europe and the United States and is currently Principal Bass of the Orlando Philharmonic and Orlando Chamber Soloists, as well as an adjunct professor at Rollins College, the University of Central Florida, and Stetson University. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, he is widely regarded as one of the most sought-after orchestral bass performers and teachers in the Southeastern U.S.; his students have gone on to leading institutions such as Juilliard and Indiana University and currently hold positions including Principal Bass of Charlotte, Air Force Bands, and regular engagements with major orchestras such as the Atlanta Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, and ensembles throughout Florida, while his education students teach in Hong Kong and across Florida. Michael’s performance career has taken him to Carnegie Hall, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Austria, Spain, and Italy, and he has recorded with artists such as Plácido Domingo, Felix Ayo, and Maria Bayo. Two days before graduating from Curtis in 1992, he won his first international audition with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León in Valladolid, Spain, followed by a second international audition in 1994 as Acting and Co-Principal Bass of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia; in 1996, he was appointed Principal Bass of the Orlando Philharmonic. He is sponsored by Solano Basses, endorsed by D’Addario Strings, and in 2008 co-founded the Chamber Music Festival of the Black Hills with his wife, Dawn Marie.
McClenty Hunter Jr. is a Grammy-nominated jazz drummer and artist-educator whose work bridges tradition, contemporary practice, and mentorship. Rooted in the jazz lineage, his musical foundation was formed in the church, where rhythm, feel, and purpose shaped his approach to time and ensemble interaction. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Howard University and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from The Juilliard School. Renowned for his deep swing and clarity of time, Hunter has performed and recorded with leading artists including Christian McBride, Kenny Barron, Kenny Garrett, Bob Mintzer, Dave Stryker, Curtis Fuller, and Lou Donaldson. His work has appeared at major venues and festivals such as the Newport Jazz Festival, the Village Vanguard, and Dizzy’s Club. He is featured on the 2025 Grammy-nominated album Without Further Ado, Vol. 1 with the Christian McBride Big Band. Hunter serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz Drum Set at the University of Central Florida.
Clarinetist Rié Suzuki has appeared internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer across Asia, Europe, North America, and Central America. She is a tenured member of The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and principal clarinet of the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, with additional performances with the Jacksonville Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Opera Philadelphia, The Philly Pops, and others. Festival appearances include Aspen, AIMS in Graz (Austria), Kusatsu (Japan), Apple Hill, and Sarasota. Her performances have been broadcast on WQXR (New York) and WRTI (Philadelphia), and her recordings appear on Naxos, Centaur, New World, Capstone, Warner Brothers, and BCM&D Records. Ayako Yonetani is a full professor of violin and viola at the University of Central Florida. Born in Kobe, Japan, she began studying violin with Saburo Sumi and won the Japan National Competition at the age of nine. She continued her training at the Juilliard School with Hyo Kang and Dorothy DeLay, later assisting Ms. DeLay at both Juilliard Pre-College and the Aspen Music Festival. Since relocating to the United States in 1982, Yonetani has enjoyed an international performing career, appearing in major venues such as Tokyo’s Kioi Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Dome Umenia in Slovakia, and Astana City Hall in Kazakhstan. Her artistic work includes acclaimed recordings, world premieres, and service as a juror for prestigious competitions. Her discography features both solo and ensemble recordings, including a Tchaikovsky/Mendelssohn concerto album named “CD of the Month” by WMFE-90.7FM. In addition to translating Teaching Genius: Dorothy DeLay and the Making of a Musician into Japanese, she directs UCF’s Pegasus String Quartet Graduate Program and returned to Carnegie Hall for a performance in November 2024.

Pre-Trip Date & Time: Monday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m.
Trip Description: Spend a relaxing day floating along the Indian River as we cast lines, enjoy the sunshine and take in the laid-back coastal atmosphere. Outdoor Adventure (OA) trip leaders will introduce basic fishing techniques and share their favorite spots, all while the river provides the perfect backdrop for an easygoing day outdoors. A Florida fishing license is included with this trip, so anyone can join in — whether you're a seasoned angler or trying fishing for the very first time. This day is all about slowing down, enjoying the water and seeing what bites.
Tentative Itinerary (time and activities are subject to change):
What’s Included: All of our adventures include all necessary gear for the activity, including kayaks, PFDs, fishing rods and more, transportation to/from the activity and professional guidance by OA Trip Leaders. All staff are certified in First Aid/CPR/AED, and most are certified Wilderness First Responders.
What’s Not Included: Participants should wear athletic clothing and appropriate footwear and bring their own lunch/water/snacks. Meals are not provided. A full packing list will be provided at the pre-trip meeting.
]]>Phil Snedecor is Professor of Trumpet at the Hartt School (of the University of Hartford) in Hartford, CT, and a former faculty member at The Peabody Conservatory, George Mason University and at Towson University. Formerly with the Baltimore Symphony, he is now a regular guest performer with the Boston Symphony and the Boston Pops. He has written a series of brass etude books that are required repertoire at many colleges and conservatories. His arrangements and compositions have been performed throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia. Phil is a Yamaha Artist.
