AMOLED Display Evolution, What is the Final Destination?

Abstract: Information display has been evolving from CRT television, bulky and heavy, to flat panel display, thin, light-weight, and flexible. This evolution is being accelerated by the development of AMOLED technology, first on rigid glass but now on flexible plastic, and stretchable for the future. This talk will discuss the evolution of AMOLED and present the development of roll-to-roll AMOLED manufacturing technology, including TFT backplane using A-SAIL (Advanced Self Aligned Imprint Lithography) and Hybrid OLED for large size TV. 

Biography: Dr. Chung is currently Chair Professor of Sungkyunkwan Advanced Institute of Nanoscience and Technology (SAINT) at Sungkyunkwan University. He was previously the Executive Vice President and CTO of Samsung SDI from 2006 to 2008. Dr. Chung led the R&D for Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED) since January, 2000 and is a world leader in bringing the AMOLED technology into the commercial market. Prior experience includes Managing Director of Memory Product Engineering and Manufacturing Technology Center at Samsung Electronics, Semiconductor Business from 1988 to 1999, and Section Head at Honeywell Corporate R&D Center in USA, managing GaAs Memory Chip development from 1984 to 1988. 

He received a number of awards and recognitions in Korea and from the global organizations. The most notable prize is the Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize from the Society for Information Display (SID), (2016), for his outstanding contribution for commercialization of the AMOLED technology. In addition, his work in OLED technology has earned him the Order of Merit in Science and Technology (2006) and also the Order of Merit for Industrial Service (2011), from the presidents of the Republic of Korea. He was awarded, the “Distinguished Alumni of the Year” from the Electrical and Computer Science Alumni Association of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. (2008) and the OLED Leadership Award (2010) from the OLED Association in USA for his outstanding leadership in OLED industry in the world. Dr. Chung received Fellow Award from the Society for Information Display (SID) in June, 2012. 

Dr. Chung received BS in Electronics Engineering in 1973 from Seoul National University, MS in 1977 from Case Western Reserve University and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1981 from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
