SUMMARY:Capability Statement Boot Camp
URL:https://events.ucf.edu/event/3700471/capability-statement-boot-camp/
DESCRIPTION:Capability Statement Boot Camp\n\npowered by the APEX Accelerator at UCF\n\nA capability statement is a popular piece of marketing collateral in government contracting. It a one-page summary of the business much like a 'company resume' and can be a great tool to introduce your business. A capability statement will not be the only piece of marketing collateral that you use in government contracting, but it can be a great first step.\n\nKara Vernon and Steve South of the APEX Accelerator at UCF will present a detailed introduction to the capability statement and how it can be used in government contracting. Highlights will include:\n\n * An Overview of the Capability Statement\n * A Review of Key Components of a Capability Statement: Core Competencies, Differentiators, Past Performance\n * The Importance of Customizing Your Capability Statement\n\n\n\nKara and Steve will also review some example capability statements as part of their discussion, and the hope is that there will be at least one or two clients that are willing to have their capability statements reviewed in front of the audience as well.\n\nJoin us for this training session focused on the cornerstone of your government contracting marketing effort!\n\nThis event is sponsored by the Florida SBDC at UCF.\n\nVirtual Location URL: https://events.blackthorn.io/en/6g3Q8Wa7/g/x4W8BcsAj4/capability-statement-boot-camp-5a1eVO6B6t3\nRegistration Link: https://events.blackthorn.io/en/6g3Q8Wa7/g/x4W8BcsAj4/capability-statement-boot-camp-5a1eVO6B6t3

DESCRIPTION:Title: Advancing the next generation of photonic systems using machine learning\n\nAbstract: The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics underscores the growing influence of machine learning in diverse areas of physical science. In the field of photonics, machine learning is proving invaluable for tasks such as optimizing and designing fiber-optical communication systems, optical amplifiers, noise characterization of frequency combs, inverse design of photonic components, and quantum-noise-limited signal detection. In this talk, I will review notable applications of machine learning in photonics and explore future directions in this emerging field. Specifically, I will highlight its role in phase noise characterization of optical frequency combs, end-to-end learning for fiber-optic communication, and realization of programmable ultra-wideband Raman amplifiers. Lastly, I will introduce an exciting new application of machine learning: controlling nonlinear interactions in highly nonlinear waveguides\n\nBiography: Darko Zibar is currently Professor at the Department of Electrical and Photonics Engineering, Technical University of Denmark and the group leader of Machine Learning in Photonics Systems (MLiPS) group. He received M.Sc. degree in telecommunication and the Ph.D. degree in optical communications from the Technical University of Denmark, in 2004 and 2007, respectively. He has been a Visiting Professor at Politecnico di Torino, Friedreich Alexander University of Erlangen, University of California Santa Barbara and University of Colorado, Boulder. His research efforts are currently focused on the application of digital signal processing and machine learning techniques to advance classical and quantum optical communication and measurement systems. Some of his major scientific contributions include: record capacity hybrid optical-wireless link (2011), record sensitive optical phase noise measurement technique that approaches the quantum limit (2021) and record-bandwidth (S+C+L band) programmable gain Raman amplifier (2019). He is the recipient of Young Researcher Award by University of Erlangen-Nurnberg (2016), European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant (2017), Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Bessel Research Award, (2021), and Villum Investigator Award (2023). Finally, he was a part of the team that won the HORIZON 2020 prize for breaking the optical transmission barriers (2016).\n\nVirtual Location URL: https://ucf.zoom.us/j/98717167672?from=addon

SUMMARY:Belay Class
URL:https://events.ucf.edu/event/3687669/belay-class/
DESCRIPTION:One of the best ways to enjoy the UCF Climbing Tower is to become belay certified! This Climbing Tower-specific certification will allow you to belay your friends at the Climbing Tower and continue to grow your climbing skills. \n\nThe Process:\n\nYou will start with a belay class. This class will teach you the basics of belaying and climbing safety. You will learn the belay method that we accept at the Climbing Tower and have the chance to practice one-on-one with our Climbing Tower staff. Please wear comfortable athletic clothing. Long athletic pants are recommended but not required. You will be required to climb during the class. If you have your own climbing equipment, we encourage you to bring your equipment with you. \n\nAfter demonstrating competency in safety and skills in the class, you will complete a belay test. The belay test will include questions about the information you learned in the belay class and a skills test. You must be able to properly demonstrate all technical aspects of the UCF Climbing Tower belay procedure to a Climbing Tower staff. It is possible to fail the belay test. You will be required to retake the belay test before you can be certified. \n\nAfter completing the belay class and passing the belay test, you will have to complete five belay check-offs before you receive your full belay certification. These check-offs are done at the Climbing Tower during normal operating hours and are intended to confirm that you can consistently perform the UCF Climbing Tower belay procedure. To complete these check-offs, let a Climbing Tower staff know that you need to complete your check-offs and they will help you.\n\nOnce you've completed all of the above, you will receive your belay certification card. Please bring that with you to the Climbing Tower! \n\nTo Register for a Belay Class:\n\nSign up for your belay class at the RWC Climbing Tower front desk during normal business hours. Students can take the stairs or elevators to the first floor and go left. The desk is behind the stairs in the northeast corner of the main building.\n\nClass registration opens two weeks before the day of the class, but participants must be registered at least 48 hours in advance. Space is limited to eight people per class.\n\nBelay classes are free for current UCF Students and RWC Members (with an active membership). If you need to cancel your registration, you must do so no later than 48 hours before the class. Failure to show up for the belay or climbing technique class, or cancel within the allotted time will result in a forfeit fee of $30.00. \n\nHow to Cancel:\n\nYou can cancel your belay class by going to the Climbing Tower or the Outdoor Adventure Center during open hours, or by emailing outdoor@ucf.edu.\n\nSpring 2025 Belay Class Dates:\n\n * Friday, January 24th - 7-9pm\n * Sunday, February 2nd - 4-6pm\n * Friday, February 14th - 7-9pm\n * Friday, March 7th - 7-9pm\n * Friday, March 14th - 7-9pm\n * Sunday, March 30th - 4-6pm\n * Friday, April 11th - 7-9pm\n\n\nRegistration Link: https://rwc.sdes.ucf.edu/programs/outdoor-adventure/rock-climbing-tower/\nRegistration Info: You must register in person at the Climbing Tower during open hours.
