The Honors Undergraduate Thesis (HUT) program allows juniors and seniors from all disciplines to engage in original and independent research as principal investigators. Over the course of two to four semesters, students work closely with a faculty committee to research, write, defend, and publish an original thesis that serves as an honors capstone product of their undergraduate career. This thesis is published through the university library and is available to researchers worldwide through electronic databases.
These information sessions cover the Honors Thesis eligibility requirements, program benefits, and an overview of the steps to complete an Honors Undergraduate thesis/creative project. During these sessions students learn about the process, benefits, ask questions, and fill out the Honors Thesis eligibility form to get started in pursuing original and independent research.

]]>Abstract: With the proliferation of networked sensors and artificial intelligence, there is an increasing need for edge computing where data is processed at the sensor level to reduce bandwidth and latency while still preserving energy efficiency. In this talk, I will discuss how meta-optics can be used to implement computation for optical edge sensors, serving to off-load computationally expensive convolutional operations from the digital platform, reducing both latency and power consumption. Meta-optics can also take advantage of additional information channels, such as polarization, spectral composition, and angle of incidence, to process information not recorded on conventional cameras. I will discuss how this increased freedom in design allows meta-optics to augment, or replace, conventional imaging optics in achieving parallel optical processing across multiple independent channels. The meta-optic frontend is demonstrated to enable segmenting and classifying objects with minimal computational resources as well as allow for spectral discrimination in classifying objects based on their emission characteristics.
About the Speaker: Professor Valentine received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 2004 and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from UC Berkeley in 2010. At Vanderbilt he is currently a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Deputy Director of the Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE). Prof. Valentine researches the optical properties of nanostructured metamaterials for imaging and image processing, photodetection, and dynamically reconfigurable optics for wavefront control. He has received an NSF CAREER Award, the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, and a Chancellor’s Award for Research.

Attendance is not required of applicants, but it is encouraged. Attendees should plan to arrive early and stay for the entire presentation which will last about one hour. There will be limited availability for advising after the session; however, you will be provided contact information to schedule a one-on-one advising appointment should you need it.

Outdoor Adventure is proud to partner with Ranger Rick's SCUBA Adventure, one of the most experienced scuba dive outfitters, for our entry-level NAUI SCUBA certification course. This course is available for students who are currently enrolled and taking classes at UCF.
Upon successful completion of this course and check-out dives, graduates are considered competent to engage in open water diving activities without supervision, provided the diving activities and the areas dived approximate those of training. No previous SCUBA experience is required; however, basic swimming skills are necessary to complete the course.
Cost
The total cost of the certification is $380 with $40 due at the time of registration. The rest of the price is due the first weekend of the certification paid to Ranger Rick SCUBA Adventures. If you pay with card there is an extra $5 charge for fees making the total $385.
Schedule
In order for the participant to receive the SCUBA certification, they must complete two consecutive weekends of training. The first weekend encompasses classroom work and practice dives in the pool. Normally, the first weekend includes Friday night, all day Saturday, and all day Sunday. For the second weekend, our instructor will pick either Saturday or Sunday to complete the Open Water Dives. There will be some adjustments to this schedule in Summer 2024, as you can see below.
Current Certification Dates:
Open Water Dives
The second weekend of the certification will be when the students can complete their open water dives. These dives take place either at Devil’s Den, Blue Grotto, KP Hole, or Blue Heron Bridge. This is a full-day commitment. Transportation is not included.
Equipment
A SCUBA-quality mask, snorkel, wetsuit, fins, and SCUBA booties are the student's responsibility to bring to all dive sessions. These pieces can be rented through the Outdoor Adventure Center and is included in the course fee. This equipment is subject to availability. All other equipment and materials are provided by Ranger Rick SCUBA Adventures.
