Youth involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems are diagnosed with mental health disorders at significantly higher rates than their peers. Some of these diagnoses are accurate and require treatment. However, trauma can often manifest in symptoms mistaken for these disorders—leading to ineffective interventions.

This session explores the myths and facts behind commonly assigned mental health disorders in system-involved youth. We'll review top reasons for misdiagnosis and strategies to avoid these pitfalls.

This webinar has been approved for & offers 1.5 continuing education contact hours for LCSWs, LMFTs, LMHCs, & CMSWs. BAP#50-12347, expires: 3/31/2027.

Learning Objectives

1. Understand the separate, but often overlapping, relationship between trauma and pathology.

2. Learn the 5 trauma reactions and their connection to presenting problems.

3. Recognize harmful diagnostic trends that lead to ineffective treatment.

4. Enhance ability to assess symptoms for greater diagnostic accuracy
