SUMMARY:CANCELED - CREOL Fall Colloquium: Jelena Vuckovic, Stanford University
URL:https://events.ucf.edu/event/4223514/creol-fall-colloquium-jelena-vuckovic-stanford-university/
DESCRIPTION:Title: Inverse designed, densely integrated classical and quantum photonics\n\nAbstract: Recent breakthroughs in photonics design, along with new nanofabrication approaches and heterogeneous integration play crucial roles in building photonics for applications including optical interconnects and quantum technologies. This design breakthrough is named photonic inverse design, and refers to efficiently searching through the space of all possible photonic device geometries, within fabrication constraints, and by employing fast electromagnetic solvers and optimization tools. Additionally, new photonic platforms have been developed which enable functionalities beyond silicon on insulator, including silicon carbide, diamond, and Titanium:sapphire on insulator, as well as ultra-strong electro-optic materials, such as strontium and barium titanate. With these new approaches to design and fabrication, novel optoelectronic devices and systems have been designed and demonstrated, including error-free and fast chip-to-chip and on-chip optical interconnects compatible with commercial foundries, chip scale Ti:sapphire lasers and amplifiers, CMOS compatible isolators and laser frequency stabilizers, and silicon carbide and diamond chip-scale quantum technologies\n\nAbout the Speaker: Jelena Vuckovic (PhD Caltech 2002) is the Jensen Huang Professor of Global Leadership, Professor of Electrical Engineering and, by courtesy, of Applied Physics at Stanford. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and an External Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics. Her honors include Zeiss Award, Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship, Geoffrey Frew Fellowship from the Australian Academy of Sciences, the IET A. F. Harvey Engineering Research Prize, Mildred Dresselhaus Lectureship from MIT, and the Humboldt Prize. She is a Fellow of the APS, Optica, and IEEE. Vuckovic is a co-founder and a lead scientific advisor of SPINS Photonics, and a lead editor of Physical Review Applied.\n\nVirtual Location URL: https://ucf.zoom.us/j/99719229550?from=addon#success

SUMMARY:Belay Class
URL:https://events.ucf.edu/event/4199768/belay-class/
DESCRIPTION:One of the best ways to enjoy the UCF Climbing Tower is to become belay certified! This Climbing Tower-specific certification will allow you to belay your friends at the Climbing Tower and continue to grow your climbing skills. \n\nThe Process:\n\nYou will start with a belay class. This class will teach you the basics of belaying and climbing safety. You will learn the belay method that we accept at the Climbing Tower and have the chance to practice one-on-one with our Climbing Tower staff. Please wear comfortable athletic clothing. Long athletic pants are recommended but not required. You will be required to climb during the class. If you have your own climbing equipment, we encourage you to bring your equipment with you. \n\nAfter demonstrating competency in safety and skills in the class, you will complete a belay test. The belay test will include questions about the information you learned in the belay class and a skills test. You must be able to properly demonstrate all technical aspects of the UCF Climbing Tower belay procedure to a Climbing Tower staff. It is possible to fail the belay test. You will be required to retake the belay test before you can be certified. \n\nAfter completing the belay class and passing the belay test, you will have to complete five belay check-offs before you receive your full belay certification. These check-offs are done at the Climbing Tower during normal operating hours and are intended to confirm that you can consistently perform the UCF Climbing Tower belay procedure. To complete these check-offs, let a Climbing Tower staff know that you need to complete your check-offs and they will help you.\n\nOnce you've completed all of the above, you will receive your belay certification card. Please bring that with you to the Climbing Tower! \n\nTo Register for a Belay Class:\n\nSign up for your belay class at the RWC Climbing Tower front desk during normal business hours. Students can take the stairs or elevators to the first floor and go left. The desk is behind the stairs in the northeast corner of the main building.\n\nClass registration opens two weeks before the day of the class, but participants must be registered at least 48 hours in advance. Space is limited to eight people per class.\n\nBelay classes are free for current UCF Students and RWC Members (with an active membership). If you need to cancel your registration, you must do so no later than 48 hours before the class. \n\nFailure to show up for the belay or climbing technique class, or cancel within the allotted time will result in a forfeit fee of $30.00. \n\nHow to Cancel:\n\nYou can cancel your belay class by going to the Climbing Tower or the Outdoor Adventure Center during open hours, or by emailing outdoor@ucf.edu.\n\nFall 2026 Dates: \n\n * Friday, September 11th: 12:00pm-2:00pm\n * Sunday, September 27th: 4:00pm-6:00pm\n * Friday, October 2nd: 7:00pm-9:00pm\n * Sunday, October 18th: 4:00pm-6:00pm\n * Friday, November 6th: 12:00pm-2:00pm\n\n\nRegistration Link: https://ucfrwc.org/Program/GetProgramDetails?courseId=5e15dc1b-10b2-42be-a6b8-4ad27361cc6a

SUMMARY:Mathematical Biology Seminar by Dr. George Zaragoza, UCF

DESCRIPTION:[Mathematical Biology Seminar](https://sciences.ucf.edu/mathbio/mathematical-biology-seminar/)\n\n[Dr. George Zaragoza](https://sciences.ucf.edu/biology/person/george-zaragoza/) (UCF Biology) will speak on "Applications of Point Process and Integrated Step-Selection Models in Wildlife Ecology" at this week's seminar.\n\nAbstract: The field of wildlife ecology increasingly uses spatial modeling tools to understand how species respond to environmental change and navigate heterogeneous landscapes. Here, we demonstrate applications of two approaches: integrated nested Laplacian approximation point process models and integrated step-selection functions. Point process models are used to estimate how the spatial distribution of a large herbivore may shift in response to climatic change, while integrated step-selection functions are used to predict how a large carnivore moves through and responds to landscape features. Together, these examples highlight how modern spatial and movement models can leverage wildlife location and environmental data to provide insight into ecological responses to changing landscapes.\n\nShort Bio: Dr. George Zaragoza is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biology at the University of Central Florida. His research examines how climate and anthropogenic change affect wildlife populations, including shifts in habitat and distribution, landscape connectivity, movement and habitat selection, and the role of adaptive genetic variation in enabling populations to respond to changing environmental conditions. Dr. Zaragoza obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of California - Davis before working in Bayer's agricultural research and development group. He earned his PhD in Integrative and Conservation Biology at the University of Central Florida, researching the impacts of environmental variability and adaptation on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi), and Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium) through the lens of population and landscape genomics. His current research uses GPS tracking data to study the habitat selection of wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) in response to changing climatic conditions. He will soon be transitioning to a research associate position at the University of Wyoming, where he will be studying chronic wasting disease in wild deer populations.

This course is available for students who are currently enrolled and taking classes at UCF. We are currently working on adding access to our certifications for RWC Members, UCF Faculty and Staff, and Valencia students.\n\nUpon successful completion of this course and check-out dives, graduates are considered competent to engage in open water diving activities without supervision, provided the diving activities and the areas dived approximate those of training. No previous SCUBA experience is required; however, basic swimming skills are necessary to complete the course.\n\nCost \nThe total cost of the certification is $400 with $60 due at the time of registration. The rest of the price is due the first weekend of the certification paid to Ranger Rick SCUBA Adventures. If you pay with card there is an extra $5 charge for fees making the total $405. \n\nSchedule\n\nTo receive the SCUBA certification, you must complete two consecutive weekends of training.\n\nAll itinerary times can be changed by the instructor as needed. Here is the general itinerary:\n\n * Friday - 5:30pm-9:00pm in the RWC Wet Classroom\n * Saturday - 8:30-4:00pm in the RWC Lap Pool\n * Sunday - All day check out dive at a local dive destination\n * Following Weekend (Sat or Sun) - All day check out dive at a local dive destination\n\n\n\nRegistration & Refund Policies \nThe registration deadline for each course is the Wednesday before the first weekend. Participants may request a refund for their deposit, or to be transferred to another certification month, until the Outdoor Adventure Center closes on that day. No refunds or transfers will be given after the registration deadline, regardless of the reason. Participants are allowed up to 1 free transfer; after that, the participant must pay another deposit. Failure to be on time for class sessions, pool sessions, and/or dives may result in complete forfeiture of all payments. In the event that Outdoor Adventure or the SCUBA program cancels a course due to weather, insufficient participation, etc, participants will receive a full refund.\n\nYou can register and pay your deposit online [here!](https://ucfrwc.org/Program/GetProgramDetails?courseId=b447c8fc-c048-4a21-9aae-bc6fa4de4aba&semesterId=e779d5c4-726f-488e-b1f4-2f72e53e3d8e) Registration will open ~3 months before the class date. SUMMARY:Belay Class
URL:https://events.ucf.edu/event/4199769/belay-class/

SUMMARY:IRB and Research Data Privacy & Security
URL:https://events.ucf.edu/event/4218967/irb-and-research-data-privacy-security/
DESCRIPTION:Research involving human subjects carries obligations that extend well past IRB approval -- they follow the data through collection, storage, sharing, and retention. This 60-minute virtual session brings the IRB and Information Security together to walk researchers through what those obligations look like in practice, and how to meet them without slowing a project down. \n \nThe IRB portion covers what reviewers look for in a protocol's data plan: how identifiable data is described, consent and participant privacy commitments, de-identification and coding, data sharing with external collaborators, and what constitutes a reportable change once a study is underway. The Information Security portion addresses safeguarding that data on the systems where it actually lives -- appropriate storage and access controls, protecting sensitive and restricted data, secure transfer and collaboration, and common missteps that create exposure. \n \nA dedicated segment covers vendor risk management (VRM): why new tools, apps, and cloud services used in research must be assessed before data is placed in them, what the review process looks at, how long it typically takes, and how to plan for it early so vendor selection doesn't become a late-stage roadblock. \n \nAttendees will leave knowing where IRB and security requirements intersect, which campus resources and approved services are available for storing and sharing research data, and who to contact at each stage. Ample time is reserved for Q&A. \n \nAudience: Open to all UCF faculty, researchers, postdocs, graduate students, and research staff.\n\nPresented by Renea Carver, Antonio Fazzalari\n\nVirtual Location URL: https://ucf.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bkgt1nGmzaoLPhQ\nRegistration Link: https://ucf.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bkgt1nGmzaoLPhQ

DESCRIPTION:Join UCF Library for a viewing of Hidden Figures (2017).\n\n"As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women, known as "human computers", we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history's greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes."\n\n[Learn more about the film.](https://ucf-flvc.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01FALSC_UCF/b5i39v/alma99384128575206596)\n\nFor more information, visit the [Library's event page](https://ucf.libcal.com/calendar/ucf-libraries-events/fall-2026-hidden-figures).\nRegistration Link: https://ucf.libcal.com/calendar/ucf-libraries-events/fall-2026-hidden-figures
