Metabarriers, defined as periodic arrays of resonant structures, enable sub-wavelength control of surface wave propagation, yet remain less explored than metasurfaces. The configuration considered consists of periodically arranged multilayered laminates, whose geometric parameters, such as layer height, volume fraction, and unit-cell size, provide tunable control over wave behavior.
\u000A
To analyze the system, we employ a non-classical dynamic asymptotic homogenization framework that replaces the discrete laminated structure with an effective dispersive multilayer. This approach allows the derivation of closed-form expressions for the dispersion relation, displacement fields, and time-averaged kinetic energy. The analytical model predicts the emergence of cut-off frequencies and hybrid dispersion regions within the first Brillouin zone. In single-layer metabarriers, one hybrid region is obtained, while bilayer configurations produce multiple cut-off frequencies and band gaps due to stronger mode coupling.
\u000A
Finite element simulations of the discrete unit cell validate the homogenized model in the low-frequency regime and confirm wave propagation within pass bands and attenuation inside band gaps. The results provide insight into Love-wave hybridization mechanisms and demonstrate the potential of laminated metabarriers for tunable wave control and energy harvesting.
\u000A
Speaker Bio: David Guinovart is an Assistant Professor at The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota, where he leads the Mathematical Modeling Lab and serves as a Bioinformatics Advisor for research teams across the institute. The strategic stacking of distinct layered materials provides a powerful route toward emergent electronic phases and strongly interacting many-body optical excitations. In particular, transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) semiconductors offer a fertile playground to engineer and control light-matter interaction through tunable electronic and excitonic degrees of freedom. In this talk, I will discuss how external electric and magnetic fields enable tunable control of electronic structure and excitonic properties in TMDC-based van der Waals systems. Focusing on the dialogue between O Brado Africano and the Boletim Geral das Colónias, I analyze how the written word both reflected and resisted the ideological foundations of Portuguese colonial rule. Through figures like João Albasini and the early Mozambican press, I examine how knowledge, identity, and utopic political visions were constructed, challenged, and disseminated. Drawing on theorists such as Benedict Anderson, Raymond Williams, and Leela Gandhi, this work interrogates the intersections of print capitalism, colonial education, and affective communities to better understand the cultural legacy of the Lusophone world during the early 20th century.
",

This design breakthrough is named photonic inverse design, and refers to efficiently searching through the space of all possible photonic device geometries, within fabrication constraints, and by employing fast electromagnetic solvers and optimization tools. Additionally, new photonic platforms have been developed which enable functionalities beyond silicon on insulator, including silicon carbide, diamond, and Titanium:sapphire on insulator, as well as ultra-strong electro-optic materials, such as strontium and barium titanate. With these new approaches to design and fabrication, novel optoelectronic devices and systems have been designed and demonstrated, including error-free and fast chip-to-chip and on-chip optical interconnects compatible with commercial foundries, chip scale Ti:sapphire lasers and amplifiers, CMOS compatible isolators and laser frequency stabilizers, and silicon carbide and diamond chip-scale quantum technologies
\u000A
About the Speaker: Jelena Vuckovic (PhD Caltech 2002) is the Jensen Huang Professor of Global Leadership, Professor of Electrical Engineering and, by courtesy, of Applied Physics at Stanford.
