]]>Dr. Christen H. Fleming, an assistant professor of biology at UCF, will speak on Scaling Individual-Level Movement Models Up to the Population Level at this week's seminar.
Abstract: Animal tracking data have transformed our ability to quantify movement processes at the level of individual organisms, yet their ability to inform population-level processes remains limited. In this talk, Christen Fleming gives a brief introduction to continuous-time stochastic process models of animal movement and presents multiple approaches to generalizing this framework to population-level modeling. In particular, he'll cover quantifying the population-level variation in individual movement/behavioral characteristics, estimating population spatial distributions or "population ranges," and integrating individual-level movement data into species distribution models of habitat suitability.
Short Bio: Dr. Christen H. Fleming is an assistant professor in UCF's Department of Biology with a highly interdisciplinary background. He completed his bachelor's degree at the University of South Alabama, majoring in physics, mathematics and statistics. He earned his doctoral degree in physics from the University of Maryland. Dr. Fleming then became a postdoctoral researcher, fellow, and, finally, research associate at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, where he developed and continues to lead the “continuous-time movement modeling” (ctmm) R software package, along with ctmm-associated labs at the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding, the University of Maryland, the University of British Columbia and the University of Arizona. ctmm is an award-winning statistical analysis package for animal tracking data, wherein tracked animal locations are modeled as a continuous-time stochastic process that is discretely sampled in time. Dr. Fleming currently heads the Ecoinformatics Lab, which works on the development and application of analytic methods for ecological, environmental and evolutionary data, with a strong focus on addressing conservation needs. The Ecoinformatics Lab aims to show how abundant yet complex data can inform conservation and management by combining mathematical, statistical and computational approaches.
]]>Andrew Bekemeyer is a UCF alumnus and sports business professional with experience spanning ticket sales, live entertainment, and fan development. A Winter Garden, Florida, native, Bekemeyer began his career with the Orlando Magic as a live entertainment intern. He now serves as the assistant director of innovation, where he drives advancements across the sports business landscape.
Zach is a sports business professional who began his career with the Orlando Magic in 2021 as an innovation graduate associate. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and with experience in Miami and Toronto, Zach has contributed to major sporting events across Florida, including two Pro Bowls, the Daytona 500, an MLS All-Star Game and a Super Bowl. His academic and hands-on experience in sports business continues to shape his approach to innovation.
]]>Modern quantum technologies depend on our ability to understand, predict, and ultimately engineer interactions between electrons, excitons, spins, and photons. In this colloquium, I will describe a method of turning quantum materials into programmable quantum systems. I will first briefly discuss how many-body GW–Bethe–Salpeter and Kadanoff–Baym approaches provide a predictive framework for the linear and nonlinear optical response of two-dimensional semiconductors, including excitonic effects, harmonic generation, and design rules for enhanced nonlinear response in layered materials. I will then focus on recent work showing that a gate-tunable conductor–dielectric–conductor heterostructure can provide universal tuning of quantum electrodynamic interactions: the same platform allows interactions to be switched from familiar power-law behavior to exponential screening and even logarithmic antiscreening, with direct implications for reconfigurable Coulomb, dipolar, van der Waals/Casimir–Polder, and spin–spin interactions.
Bio:
Michael N. Leuenberger is Professor of Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Central Florida, with appointments in the NanoScience Technology Center and Department of Physics. He is also a Visiting Scientist at MIT. He received his Ph.D. in theoretical condensed matter physics from the University of Basel, Switzerland, under Daniel Loss, and subsequently held postdoctoral positions at the University of Iowa with Michael Flatté and at UC San Diego with Lu Sham. His research spans quantum information science, nonlinear optics, many-body theory of quantum materials, and multiscale modeling of quantum devices. He has led or co-led research supported by AFOSR, ARO, DARPA, NSF, and ONR, and his recent work includes predictive many-body theories of nonlinear optical response in 2D materials, excitonic quantum matter in breathing-kagome materials, and programmable quantum electrodynamic interactions in van der Waals heterostructures.

]]>Abstract: Recent breakthroughs in photonics design, along with new nanofabrication approaches and heterogeneous integration, play crucial roles in building photonics for applications including optical interconnects and quantum technologies. This design breakthrough, called photonic inverse design, refers to efficiently searching the space of possible photonic device geometries within fabrication constraints, using fast electromagnetic solvers and optimization tools. Additionally, new photonic platforms have been developed that enable functionalities beyond silicon-on-insulator, including silicon carbide, diamond, and Titanium: sapphire on insulator, as well as ultra-strong electro-optic materials, such as strontium and barium titanate. With these new design and fabrication approaches, researchers have designed and demonstrated novel optoelectronic devices and systems, including error-free, fast chip-to-chip and on-chip optical interconnects compatible with commercial foundries; chip-scale Ti:sapphire lasers and amplifiers; CMOS-compatible isolators and laser frequency stabilizers; and silicon carbide and diamond chip-scale quantum technologies.
About the Speaker: Jelena Vuckovic (PhD Caltech 2002) is the Jensen Huang Professor of global leadership, a professor of electrical engineering and, by courtesy, of applied physics at Stanford University. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and an External Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics. Her honors include the Zeiss Award, Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship, Geoffrey Frew Fellowship from the Australian Academy of Sciences, the IET A. F. Harvey Engineering Research Prize, the Mildred Dresselhaus Lectureship from MIT and the Humboldt Prize. She is a fellow of the APS, Optica and IEEE. Vuckovic is a co-founder and a lead scientific advisor of SPINS Photonics, and a lead editor of Physical Review Applied.
