The Construction of Memory and Peace-Building Efforts in Post Conflict Colombia

Thursday, October 10, 2019 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

As part of our UCF-USF speaker exchange, Associate Professor Dr. Rachel May will be delivering a talk. We invite you to join us for this meaningful, thoughtful, and insightful chat!

Abstract:
Professor May will discuss the history of the peace process in Colombia, and the historical context of the recent peace accord. She will also discuss other truth and memory projects which have preceded the Colombian case. In addition she will bring to light some of the difficulties in achieving a true peace after a negotiated settlement such as this.

This research will primarily examine the various ways in which “memory” is defined and used (both formally by the government, and informally by Colombian citizens and communities) to make moral claims and to establish a normative framework for peace in Colombia.
