Abstract:
Professor May will discuss the history of the peace process in Colombia, and the historical context of the recent peace accord. She will also discuss other truth and memory projects which have preceded the Colombian case. In addition she will bring to light some of the difficulties in achieving a true peace after a negotiated settlement such as this.
This research will primarily examine the various ways in which “memory” is defined and used (both formally by the government, and informally by Colombian citizens and communities) to make moral claims and to establish a normative framework for peace in Colombia.
Bio:
Rachel May teaches Latin American studies and international human rights in the Department of humanities and cultural studies at the University of South Florida. Previously she was the Director of the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean (ISLAC) at USF for 9 years. Her recent co-authored book, Caribbean Revolutions was published by Cambridge University Press in 2018. Her previous book (edited volume), La Florida won the gold medal for the Florida Book Prize for Florida non-fiction in 2014. Her current work concerns the question of memory and peace-building in post-conflict Colombia.
