Free Space Optics Panel

Wednesday, November 20, 2019 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

SOS will be hosting a panel on Free Space Optical Communications in CREOL 103 at 6pm. The panel will feature our very own Dr. Peter J. Delfyett, Dr. Guifang Li and guest speaker Roger McGarrahan, the CEO of Pathfinder Digital.

Pathfinder Digital was recently awarded a contract with NASA to study the feasibility of using free space optics from the ground and between satellites. Their company has taken on the task of developing a transportable platform to facilitate the design and testing of FSO satellite networks.

This event is open to all students, faculty and staff. Please feel free to come in and ask any questions about FSO, Pathfinder, or optical communications in general! We hope to see you out there.

About the Panelists:
Dr. Peter J. Delfyett is the head of the Ultrafast Photonics research group at CREOL. He has contributed many ground-breaking technologies to the world of photonic science, including the world's fastest, most powerful modelocked semiconductor laser diode. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics for several years and currently sits on the UCF Board of Trustees as the Chair Professor of Optics, ECE & Physics.

Dr. Guifang Li is the head of the Optical Communications research group at CREOL. An expert in his field, his group focuses on high-capacity optical communication through linear and nonlinear channels, including free space and optical fiber. An author/co-author of over 150 scientific publications, he was the director of the NSF IGERT program in Optical Communications and Networking at UCF, and currently teaches courses relating to optical communications at CREOL.

Roger Mc Garrahan is the CEO and co-founder of PathFinder Digital LLC, which provides custom satellite communications solutions including design, integration, field support and servicing for military and commercial applications. Previously CEO of Thomson/Thales Broadcast & Multimedia, Inc., a company which designs, manufactures, sells and supports terrestrial television transmitters and digital video streaming products for the broadcast and telecommunications industry. He has over 15 years of experience consulting and advising with companies in the communications, aviation and defense industries before taking on his own businesses.
