The Transgender Day of Remembrance was started by transgender
advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a
transgender woman who was killed in 1998.
Transgender Day of Remembrance recognizes the individuals lost due to
anti-transgender violence and suicide. The event raises awareness of hate
crimes against transgender individuals, in addition to providing a public
memorial where people can mourn the loss of those who have lost their lives. It
also serves as a way for LGBTQ+ community and Allies to come together.
Everyone is invited to join the Multicultural Student Center on Friday,
November 20 at the Reflecting Pond 7 p.m. as UCF hosts a candlelight vigil in
recognition of Transgender Day of Remembrance.
