9th Annual Kill-a-Watt Energy Conservation Competition

Monday, February 1, 2016 midnight to Tuesday, April 12

Win scholarships! Make a difference! Protect our environment! Learn new ways to save money by conserving energy.

For the last 9 years, the Office of Sustainability Initiatives, in conjunction with the Department of Housing and Residence Life, has led a campaign to reward students who reduce their personal energy consumption. Overtime, the name, rules, and incentives have seen several revisions but the exponential growth in energy savings is consistent. In years past, the Kill-a-Watt competition has resulted in savings of nearly $50,000 over the two-month period and has saved the university a total of 2,216,485 kWh of energy, equivalent to $216,004.00. The energy saved could power 200 average homes in the United States for a full year... but we aren't stopping there.

This year, the rules will stay the same but the rewards have gotten a lot more serious.

 GRAND PRIZE $750 scholarships

 Runner Up $350 scholarships

 Honorable Mention $100 scholarships

Think this could be you?! We think so too. Here’s how to participate…

Starting February 1st 2016, residents will work together to reduce their building energy usage. To make things fair, we’ve separated buildings into different groups according to size. For example, Group 5 is comprised of the entire Towers Community. Buildings within a particular group compete to achieve the greatest energy reduction. Buildings must achieve at least a 20% reduction by the end of the competition! Residents of best performing buildings are eligible for scholarships provided by SGA and will receive notification via email stating scholarship eligibility. To claim your scholarship, post a webcam/YouTube video or digital art piece to the Sustainable UCF Facebook page answering the question "What did I do to save energy?" Ultimately, we want to know why you think reducing your energy usage is important to UCF and the global community.

FYI: Every on-campus and affiliated resident is invited to participate. A full list of rules and restrictions is on our website.
