CREOL Fall Colloquium Series: Li Fang - Ultrafast X-ray and XUV spectroscopy of charge dynamics in molecular systems

Monday, November 15, 2021 noon to 1 p.m.

Abstract: Thanks to recent advances in laser and light source technology, the scientific investigation of fundamental aspects of photointeractions with the basic elements composing materials is now possible in both the short and long wavelength regime. I will present prior research results and future opportunities of using ultrafast photon sources for time-resolved studies of charged-particle dynamics subsequent to the initial photoionization or photoexcitation of isolated as well as aggregated atomic and molecular systems. I will discuss the necessary photon source parameters that enable advanced spectroscopic methods and the insightful information these time-domain and multi-dimensional experimental methods could provide. Specifically, I will present a study of the photo-induced electron motion with attosecond pulses in the XUV and x-ray regime at the atomic spatial and temporal resolution, and a study of the formation of nanoplasmas in gaseous clusters using ultrashort laser pulses at short and long wavelengths.

Biography:  Li Fang received her PhD in physics in 2009 from University of Connecticut working in strong-field induced dynamics in molecules using ultrafast lasers. She did her postdoctoral work at the Linear Coherent Light Source (LCLS), SLAC national laboratory with a research focus on investigation of photointeraction in the x-ray range using free-electron-lasers and synchrotron light sources. Before she joined UCF as an assistant professor in the Department of Physics in 2020, she did research work concerning attosecond light source and applications in plasma physics at University of Texas at Austin and the Ohio State University as a staff scientist. Li Fang received the Department of Energy Early Career award in 2021.
