CREOL Spring Colloquium Series: Dave Aikens - New developments in ISO standards for optics

Thursday, March 3, 2022 noon to 1 p.m.

Abstract: Standards are living documents. By design, every five years the committee votes on whether to confirm, withdraw, or revise each standard, and at least five countries must have adopted the standard for it to be confirmed. As a result, the various parts of ISO 10110 and the other associated standards have undergone multiple revisions since their first publication in 1994. This talk begin with an overview of standards in general and ISO 10110 in particular. Then we will cover the most important recent changes to the standard and what that means to an optical engineer. Next, we will introduce some of the less-known but important standards that help round out the ISO 10110 system, like coatings, environmental, and testing standards. Finally, we will discuss opportunities for improvement and for new standards, and how I expect things to play out in the next decade in the world of optics standards.

About the speaker: Dave Aikens is an optical design engineer at Savvy Optics Corp, a company he founded in 2007. He has been working on the standardization of optics drawings since his first job at Hughes Aircraft Company in 1983. He is a graduate of the University of Rochester (BS ’83, MS ’84), a Fellow of SPIE, and the 2021 recipient of the A. E. Conrady award. He currently serves as the Chair of the Technical Advisory Group to ISO Technical Committee TC172, responsible for standards in optics and photonics.
