Abstract:
Our research at the National Center for Forensic Science has intrinsically been linked to anthropological applications. A first aspect is the development of elemental profiling for forensic anthropology, especially in the context of commingled remains, thanks to support from the National Institute of Justice and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. We are also working on a more quantitative and applicable approach by merging the experience of anthropologists and the chemical profiling provided by the portable instrumentation. A second facet to our research is the synthesis of chemical standard reference materials for hard biomaterials to provide quantitative chemical analysis of human tissues by laser-ablation techniques. Finally, besides the analysis of remains, we explore a new way to analyze pollen grains by combining molecular analyses in addition to morphological examination. This interdisciplinary science is integral to advancing both fields.
