Dissertation Title: A Comprehensive Study Of The Learning Styles Of Student Athletes And Academic Advisors At Three Institutions In The American Athletic Conference And The Tools And Resources Used To Ensure The Academic Success Of Student Athletes
The main goal of this research was to identify whether the number of tools and resources used by student athlete academic advisors affected the Graduation Success Rates of three institutions in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). In addition, this research identified the specific learning styles of student athletes and those tools and resources used by academic advisors to advise these students. The research results provided a range for the number and type of tools and resources used by academic advisors with athletes.
The literature review of this study found that there were many challenges faced by student athletes that play a significant role in their college experience. Challenges such as time demands, isolation, negative stereotyping and identity conflict hinder the student athlete’s ability to succeed academically in college. In addition, the incoming academic level of the student athlete also impacts their academic success. A Chi-Square Test for Independence and Fisher’s Exact Test found that the number of tools and resources used by academic advisors affects the Graduation Success Rate of an institution in the American Athletic Conference. In addition, the study also identified that two learning styles of David Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory are largely utilized by student athletes. Suggestions for practitioners include identifying tools and resources that would play a larger role in the academic success of student athlete’s particular learning styles.
