UCF Alumni: Palm Beach Chapter Great American Cleanup

Saturday, April 15, 2017 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Want a chance to make a difference in your community with fellow AlumKnights? Come out to the Great American Cleanup at Ocean Cay Park hosted by Friends of Jupiter Beach!

Friends of Jupiter Beach is a grassroots, volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization dedicated to keeping Jupiter Beach clean and dog-friendly. They have been organizing beach cleanups since 1994. Volunteers, ages 4 to 84, arrive from 15 area zip codes to help remove trash and recyclables before gathering for a complimentary continental breakfast and door prizes. On average, 210 volunteers help remove an estimated 490 pounds of garbage on this 2.5 mile stretch of beach plus the Jupiter Inlet every month. Rapid Removal donates its time and truck to haul away recyclables, which is another benefit to the environment.

Great American Cleanup Information: Where do we meet?Saturday, April 15 at 8 a.m. at Ocean Cay Park, on the southeast corner of US Highway 1 (north of Donald Ross Road and south of Indiantown Road). Sign in at the Anita Lankler Pavilion, which faces the beach road. The cleanup will end promptly at 10 a.m.

What do I wear?Closed-toe shoes, hats, sunscreen and bug spray. NO FLIP FLOPS. Protect arms and legs.

What happens once I get there?Sign in and grab your gloves, grabbers, and bags provided by FJB. Join a team and follow a team captain wearing an orange shirt. We will clean a 2.5 mile stretch from the Juno Beach Pier to the southern edge of Carlin Park (crossovers 22-59). Some sections are within walking distance, while other sections require driving. Clean the beach, along walkways, under crossovers, in parking areas, in the park, etc. (never in sand dunes or sea grasses). We separate recyclables. Leave bags by the trashcans along the sidewalk, not on the beach or road. Help team captains dump trash into black bags and recyclables into blue bags. Volunteers are also needed to assist with sign in and handing out T-shirts. Dogs stay home during the cleanup!

Will there be food at the event?Return to the pavilion before 9:30 a.m. to enjoy a variety of complimentary breakfast foods, home-baked goods, drinks and talk with old and new friends. By 10 a.m., you’re out of there!

What if it rains?Beach cleanups are cancelled in rain or dangerous weather. If in doubt, call 561.748.8140 by 7 a.m. If there is no cancel message, the cleanup is a go.

Where do I register?Sign in at the Anita Lankler Pavilion. Friends of Jupiter Beach will receive $10 for every volunteer that submits the Great American Cleanup form! The sign-in process will be more efficient if you arrive with the form completed, but we will have forms on-hand the day of the event.
