Exploring Indian Food History: The Tradition and Culture of Goan Feni

Wednesday, September 2, 2026 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Join Devon Newhouse, Ph.D., for an exploration of the global influences that have shaped Goan cuisine through the history of feni, the first distilled spirit to receive a geographic indication designation in India. Although feni's distillation techniques predate the arrival of Europeans in India, the Portuguese introduction of cashews gave Goans a new ingredient.

The talk will also highlight how food studies uncover the global influences within Indian cuisine and explore funding opportunities, including the Fulbright Scholarship, that make this research possible.

Moderated by: Ty Matejowsky, Ph.D., professor and chair of UCF's Department of Anthropology

Refreshments will be provided.
