en-US This presentation will cover a professional development (PD) in the form of a summer institute and student camp with the aim of helping teachers reach rural students, especially a high multilingual student population, through literacy initiatives. We will discuss translanguaging as a lens for teachers to view the writing instruction in their classrooms, how this entails skills of speaking, listening, writing, and reading, how teachers implemented multilingual, multimodal narrative writing with students, how multimodal, multilingual resources were used from text sets to Lego kits, and how teachers enacted and reacted to this PD for their third- through sixth-grade students. This session is relevant for K-12 teachers who will gain literacy curriculum options for their students, PD providers who will learn of PD initiatives that may also relate to their contexts, and educational researchers interested in literacy PD and its relevance for teachers.
