The Pieta Project

Wednesday, April 4, 2018 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Have you ever felt sorrow for those around you that you cannot seem to express? Have you ever felt fragile but were required to be strong? Have you recognized injustice around you, but didn’t know what to do with it or how to react?

Hear me. This is for you.

For all of the brown children who get the “talk” about how to keep themselves “safe” from the police. For beleaguered parents who know their child will suffer iniquity by simply being. For all those who ache to move free from reproach due to appearance. This is for you.

Come. Lay your burden down.

Come. Be comforted.

Come. Grieve.

Come. Be.

In her most recent installment, Pieta, Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz invites 33 volunteers of color to be held by her, each for 3 minutes and 33 seconds. To lay their grief down, let their guard down and be vulnerable. “We live in a world where we’re [people of color] told to ‘get over it’ and ‘move on’ while at the same time we constantly see our brothers and sisters lost to injustice,” Raimundi-Ortiz says. “I wanted to create a space for us to be able to stop and feel. To start healing. This is a chance for me to hold my community, let them know I see them and I feel them.”

Join us at 6 p.m. April 4 in the Student Union and be part of something powerful.

This project is funded (fully or in part) by the UCF Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the College of Arts and Humanities and Faculty Excellence.
