On October 17, 2018, 12 p.m., join Dr. Luis Santiago as he presents, "Post-Hurricane Maria Civic Visions of Community Based Flood Risk Management: The Case of San Juan, Puerto Rico."

This initial stage research explores how civic visions of San Juan, Puerto Rico have been reframed as a result of Hurricane Maria. Santiago is consulting thirty community leaders using semi-structured interviews to assess pre and post-hurricane dominant and marginal visions of urban flood management in San Juan. The role of green infrastructure is of relevance given the insufficiency of current engineered measures to minimize vulnerability to hurricane damage and a history of failed implementation of short term local coping strategies. The documentation of civic ecologically sensitive approaches may become a key component of flood control management strategies given current financing constraints for engineered infrastructure, and an increase in the frequency and severity of extreme storm events in the Caribbean.
