This remote island offers expansive canyon views, rugged mountain terrain, and pristine ocean landscapes, with campgrounds ranging from beachside sites to elevated backcountry ridgelines.\n\nThis is a physically and mentally engaging expedition designed for students looking to challenge themselves, build leadership skills, and connect deeply with both nature and their peers.\n\nWeather\n\nCatalina Island is generally dry and temperate, with expected temperatures between 50-60°F. There is a higher chance of rain between January and March, so participants should be prepared with appropriate layers and rain protection.\n\nTentative Itinerary (time and activities are subject to change)\n\nDay 1 - Sunday, March 15 \nFly to Los Angeles, CA (LAX) \nTravel to ferry terminal and ferry to Santa Catalina Island \nHike to first campsite and set up camp\n\nDays 2-6 - March 16-20 \nDaily backpacking along the Trans-Catalina Trail, covering rugged coastal and mountain terrain. Participants are responsible for booking their own flights, as well as providing personal clothing and gear, including hiking boots or shoes. A full packing list will be provided at the Pre-Trip Meetings.\n\nTrip Expectations\n\nThis is not a luxury trip -- participants should expect a true backpacking experience. The group will hike approximately 40 miles while carrying 40-50 pound packs and gaining roughly 9,600 feet in elevation. Prior backpacking experience is helpful but not required, as Trip Leaders will provide training and instruction before and throughout the expedition.\n\nParticipant Expectations\n\nThis trip is designed for students who are excited to explore a rugged natural environment, learn new skills, and step outside their comfort zone. SUMMARY:Moonlight Paddle
URL:https://events.ucf.edu/event/4067791/moonlight-paddle/
DESCRIPTION:Join Outdoor Adventure for a guided nighttime paddle on Lake Claire with our Moonlight Paddle Series. After a brief safety and paddling overview, we'll launch together and enjoy a relaxed paddle as the lake transforms after dark. \n \nAlong the way, Paddle Guides will share insight into the ecology and history of Lake Claire while introducing the principles of Leave No Trace, helping participants better understand how to responsibly enjoy natural spaces. \n \nMoonlight Paddles are designed to be beginner-friendly and low-pressure. Paddle Guides provide all necessary equipment, safety lighting, and guidance throughout the experience. Whether you're looking to unwind, try paddling at night for the first time, or enjoy a unique view of campus, this paddle offers a calm and memorable way to get outside. \n \nFebruary 17 -- New Moon \nThis paddle takes place during a New Moon, meaning minimal natural light and a darker, quieter experience on the water. Expect a more immersive nighttime atmosphere with safety lighting provided. \n \nMarch 3 -- Full Moon & Lunar Eclipse \nThis Moonlight Paddle takes place during a Full Moon and a total lunar eclipse -- often referred to as a "Blood Moon" for the reddish tint the moon can take on during totality. From our location, the moon will be low on the western horizon, and participants may have the opportunity to catch the early stages of the eclipse before moonset. While the full total eclipse is not expected to be visible from our area, this still offers a rare chance to be on the water during a unique celestial event. \n \nApril 2 -- Full Moon \nThis paddle takes place during a Full Moon, providing more natural moonlight on the lake and a brighter nighttime paddling experience.\nRegistration Link: https://ucfrwc.org/Program/GetProgramDetails?courseId=c94d733d-8376-452b-ba4f-2dadb88f54b4\nRegistration Info: Registration opens 2 weeks before the event at 12:00pm. Registration closes at noon on the day of the event.
