Mummies: Culture, Science and People From Around the World

Wednesday, June 10, 2015 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
UCF has a unique opportunity to hear from Dr. Heather
Gill-Frerking, director of Science & Education for the Mummies of the World
traveling exhibition. On Wednesday, June 10, at 7 p.m.at the UCF Main Campus,
Psychology Building, Room 108,
Dr. Gill-Frerking will present "Mummies:
Culture, Science and People From Around the World."
The Mummies of the
World exhibition will open at the Orlando Science Center on June 13.

Mummies of the World is one of the largest
exhibitions of mummies and related artifacts ever assembled. This
groundbreaking exhibition bridges the gap between past and present, showing how
science can shed light on history, the study of medicine and cultures around
the world. Featuring a never-before-seen collection of objects and specimens,
including real human and animal mummies and related artifacts from South
America, Europe and Egypt, Mummies of the World also demonstrates that
mummification - both through natural and intentional processes - has taken
place all over the globe, from the hot desert sands of South America to remote
European bogs. To learn more, visit mummiesoftheworld.com.

In the presentation at UCF, Dr. Gill-Frerking will
explore some of the cultural and environmental reasons that bodies may
preserve, and share some of my recent research on mummies from South America,
Europe and Egypt. Come and hear the stories of the German Baron with leather
boots, the South American woman with tattoos, the infant from ancient Egypt who
was older than first believed, the Iron Age body from northern Germany that had
been misinterpreted for more than 50 years, and many other interesting people
of the past. > For more information, visit cos.ucf.edu/mummies.
