UCF Alumni: Step Right UP! Art of a Sideshow

Thursday, August 27, 2015 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The UCF Art Gallery invites you to attend the closing extravaganza of their current exhibition, "Step Right UP! Art of the Sideshow" on Aug. 27. The exhibition features historical carnival sideshow banners from the collection of Howard Marks by artists including Fred Johnson, Snap Wyatt, Jack Sigler, and Johnny Meah, as well as works by contemporary artists and photographs of the fair taken in the 1930s and 1940s, all of which was curated by Dr. Keri Watson, UCF Assistant Professor of Art History. There will be a special guest performance by Johnny Meah, The Czar of Bizarre, one of the last living links with traditional sideshow culture and banner painting.
Alumni and friends are invited to “A Look at the Sideshow,”a performance piece in the gallery written and directed by Be Boyd and John Shafer on Aug. 29. The play portrays the challenging lives of real sideshow performers such as:
  • John Merrick, The Elephant Man
  • Annie Jones, The Bearded Lady
  • Francesco A. Lentini, The Three-legged Wonder
  • Grady Stiles, Lobster Boy
The exhibition remains on view through Sunday, Aug. 30. The UCF Art Gallery is open weekdays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and weekends by appointment. Read More
