Adaptive Planning for Coastal Resistance Under Climate Change

Friday, January 22, 2016 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Office of Faculty Excellence, the Office of the Provost and the School of Public Administration present "Adaptive Planning for Coastal Resistance Under Climate Change," featuring guest speaker Zhengtong Thang, Ph.D., an associate professor of comunity and regional planning at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Coastal communities are facing multiple, critical challenges, such as increasing and aging populations, fast land development and a changing climate. The Florida coast is quickly becoming one of the fastest-growing areas in the country, and it provides an ideal “living laboratory” for examining coastal resilience principles and practices, including urban infrastructure adaptations, stakeholders and public engagement, and ecological function improvement.

Under the scenario of climate change and urbanization, three components – hazard, exposure and vulnerability – will be investigated during this discussion to aid in risk assessment and to construct coastal communities that are more socially, economically and physically resilient.
