Why We Do and Don't Worry About Climate Change

Monday, February 1, 2016 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The UCF Faculty Excellence Speaker Series prsents "Why We Do and Don't Worry About Climate Change," by Dr. Kenny Broad, Professor and Chair of Marine Ecosystems and Society at the University of Miami.

Traditionally, environmental and social problems have been looked at in isolation by different disciplines, but until the sciences engage with people who actually experience problems and the policymakers who deal with these issues, we’ll never find the best solutions. Given the scientific consensus regarding climate change, what are the psychological and cultural factors that affect the public’s willingness to take action at the personal and policy level? Drawing on studies from different fields related to risk perception, we will discuss some of the dominant cognitive and sociocultural influences on environmental decision-making, focusing on coastal south Florida, one of the most vulnerable places in the country with respect to climate change.

This presentation is hosted by UCF Faculty Excellence, Office of the Provost and the Department of Anthropology.
