Research Colloquia and Dialogue Series

Thursday, January 28, 2016 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

This month's lecture, " The IDEA Model: A Practical Tool for Creating and Sharing Crisis Messages," will be presented by Tim and Deanna Sellnow, professors of strategic communication at the Nicholson School of Communication.

The presentation focuses on results from a series of message testing experiments conducted by the presenters with funding from the Department of Homeland Security and the United States Geological Survey. Based on their findings, they have developed a model for rapidly generating messages designed to effectively instruct receivers on how to best protect themselves at the onset of a crisis event. Their IDEA model can be applied in a variety of crisis contexts where residents or consumers face an imminent threat to their security. The presenters have shared their model and related research with a variety of agencies and organizations in the United States. They have also been invited to discuss this extensive project with scholars and policy makers in such countries as Sweden, Egypt, Senegal, Vietnam, India, China, and Indonesia.
