Research Colloquium: Enhancing Community Resilience to Floods

Please join us on January 12, 2017, 4 p.m., for a research presentation by special guest Abdul-Akeem Sadiq, Ph.D., visiting UCF from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. Dr. Sadiq’s presentation examines the FEMA Community Rating System program, designed to promote local flood resilience. 

Dr. Abdul-Akeem Sadiq’s Bio

Abdul-Akeem Sadiq is an Associate Professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. He received his joint PhD in Public Policy from Georgia State University and Georgia Institute of Technology in 2009. After graduating, he served as a lecturer in the Emergency Administration and Planning Program at University of North Texas (UNT). In 2010, Dr. Sadiq, along with two other researchers conducted a study in Haiti after the 2010 devastating earthquake. The study, which was funded by the National Science Foundation, focused on understanding mass fatality management-related issues following the earthquake. In 2014, he was awarded the National Science Foundation Enabling the Next Generation of Hazards and Disasters Researchers Fellowship. Finally, in 2016, Dr. Sadiq (PI) and another researcher were awarded a National Science Foundation grant to study ways to enhance community resilience to floods.

Dr. Sadiq’s research focuses on organizational disaster preparedness and mitigation, risk perceptions of man-made and natural hazards, community resilience to floods, and collaborative governance. He has published 21peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters. His publications have been featured in several top journals including Risk Analysis, Public Administration Review, Natural Hazards, Nonprofit Voluntary Sector Quarterly, American Review of Public Administration, Natural Hazards Review, and Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management. At the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Dr. Sadiq teaches Terrorism and Public Policy, Public Safety in America, and Emergency Management.
