Title: Environmental Chemistry Perspectives on Thermochemical Conversion Processes

Abstract:

Her research focuses on formation, transformation and degradation of organic pollutants in thermochemical treatment of biomass and other biomaterials, and thermochemical conversion of low-cost and low-demand materials into high-grade biochars suitable for use in environmental applications such as water purification, soil amendment and in-situ soil remediation. Thermal behavior of biomass/biomaterials with a complex chemical composition or with high contents of moisture, ash, metals or organic contaminants is another area of interest. The presentation will describe findings from recent and ongoing projects on formation of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in torrefaction of wastewood, removal of contaminants in wastewater in Africa using carbonized crop residues, conversion of pure lignin fractions from forestry biomass into advanced carbon products, and the NASA collaboration on thermochemical conversion of waste generated during long-duration space missions into valuable products.
