Presented by Dr. Arthur Demarest, Ingram Professor & Director of the Vanderbilt Institute of Mesoamerican Archaeology at Vanderbilt.

Dr. Demarest will explore the most recent and surprising discoveries on the nature of the ancient Maya and the mystery of their dramatic collapse, as well as some possible lessons (or warnings?) for our own modern civilization.

Dr. Demarest is completing his twenty-sixth field season as a project director in Central America, currently excavating the ancient Maya port city of Cancuen and exploring the sites along the ancient Maya trade routes. His publications include over a hundred articles and twenty books and monographs. He was awarded the Orden Nacional del Patrimonio Cultrural by the President of the Republic of Guatemala in recognition of his work in community development, archaeology, and education.
