Teaching Writing in the Disciplines Workshop Series: Using “Writing to Learn” Assignments to Increase Student Learning and Communication Abilities

Tuesday, February 10, 2015 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Studies have shown how writing assignments help students learn
and remember content covered in class. While writing facilitates learning
effectively, not every class is suited to teach a formal, major writing
assignment, such as a research paper. Short, informal writing assignments will
encourage students to focus their attention on a particular aspect of a reading
or the subject at hand.

This workshop will explore how informal writing
assignments in participants’ disciplines can enhance student learning in their
classes. Students who are physically, visibly and personally engaged in
learning activities retain content knowledge better.
