Topic: The Portuguese Colonization in Africa: an Empire of Words
This presentation focuses on the role of colonial literature in interpreting, valorizing, and justifying the Portuguese Empire. I trace the evolution of race relations in the Lusophone world of Africa from the 1920s to the 1960s. During the 1920s, the New State launched a propaganda campaign enlisting authors to write about the colonies as a means of encouraging emigration to Africa. The Agência Geral das Colónias, the first colonial propaganda organization in Portugal, played an important role in the cultural imperial process by awarding prizes to books that represented colonial themes, settings and social relations between 1926 and 1968.
