The UCF History Department and the Africana Studies Program is pleased to announce the Dr. John T. Washington Lecture Series benefiting scholarships for Africana Studies Minors. This new lecture series upholds the legacy and continues the mission of the annual Dr. John T. Washington Community Service and Scholarship Awards Luncheon.
A'Lelia Bundles, Madam C. J. Walker's great-great-granddaughter and biographer, examines Walker's legacy as a trailblazing entrepreneur, activist and educator. Like Dr. John T. Washington, Walker used her talents to empower others and to build institutions. While Walker is most well-known as a pioneer of the modern hair care industry, she also was a philanthropist who supported civil rights causes, women's economic independence and arts initiatives. Walker's inspiring story will air in late 2019 as a Netflix series starring Octavia Spencer.
Author and journalist A’Lelia Bundles is at work on her fifth book, The Joy Goddess of Harlem: A’Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance, a biography of her great-grandmother, whose parties and arts patronage helped define that era. On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C.J. Walker—her biography of her great-great-grandmother—was named a New York Times Notable Book.
