Tuesday, March 19, 2019 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

THE UCF DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE PRESENTS:

Lieutenant General (retired) Mark Hertling

As the new Commander of the Army’s 1st Armored Division in 2007, Major General Mark Hertling was tasked to organize and deploy the Army’s first “plug-and-play” task force as part of the political decision known as “the surge.” The task force pulled together forces from all over the U.S. and Europe, deploying them to Iraq and then partnering with five Iraqi Army Divisions, Kurdish Peshmerga, Iraqi border patrol and Iraqi police. Hertling’s Task Force Iron had a military and political mission: conduct counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations while stabilizing the government and improving security in the seven northern provinces.

Hertling will discuss the dynamics of building a multi-national force; coordinating the actions of the US State Department, USAID, politicians in the Iraqi government and a variety of NGOs; training and conducting operations with over 120,000 Iraqi security forces; and countering a variety of terrorist organizations and an active insurgency.
