Flickering Landscapes Conference - The Image of Migration: Landscapes and People

The public is invited to attend this conference and all events associated with it free of charge. The conference brings together scholars and filmmakers to address how moving images depict the relationship between human migration and place. Our definition of migration encompasses any movement of peoples, including migration within nations or across national boundaries. The variety of the spaces migrants move across demands that we define place in the broadest terms possible: land, and sea, and the built environment. Keynote Speaker Dorita Hannah: Flickering Figures and Homing Phones: Mediating Bodies A/Part

Dorita Hannah:
Dorita Hannah (University of Tasmania, AU, and Auckland, NZ) is a trans-disciplinary practitioner/scholar who works across the spatial, visual and performing arts to focus on architectural performativity and performance design. The author of numerous chapters and articles, as well as the anthology, Performance Design (2008) and authored book, Event-Space: Theatre Architecture and the Historical Avant-Garde (2018), Hannah's work investigates the dynamics and fabrications of democratic space and how our contemporary cultural environments interact with lived experiences. She will discuss her recent installation PhoneHome, which is comprised of videos that play on mobile phone screens housed in miniature refugee cabins. Made in collaboration with international artists and correspondents, PhoneHome was featured at the Chile Architecture & Urbanism Biennial (2017). It utilises embodied engagement and a mediated view to address the pervasive geo-cultural, geo-mythical, and geo-political issues of our time as well as architecture’s role in housing those without home or homeland.
