Author Talk with Emily St. John Mandel

NEA Big Read at UCF presents award-winning author Emily St. John Mandel for a discussion of her post-apocalyptic novel Station Eleven lead by UCF faculty member, David James Poissant.

  • Emily St. John Mandel
    Emily St. John Mandel is the author of four novels, most recently Station Eleven, which was a finalist for a National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award, and won the 2015 Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Toronto Book Award, and the Morning News Tournament of Books, and has been translated into 31 languages. A previous novel, The Singer’s Gun, was the 2014 winner of the Prix Mystere de la Critique in France. Her short fiction and essays have been anthologized in numerous collections, including Best American Mystery Stories 2013. She is a staff writer for The Millions. She lives in New York City with her husband and daughter.
  • David James Poissant
    Associate Professor of Creative Writing
    David James Poissant is the author of THE HEAVEN OF ANIMALS: STORIES (Simon & Schuster, 2014), longlisted for the PEN / Robert W. Bingham Prize, winner of the GLCA New Writers Award and a Florida Book Award, and a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize. Poissant’s stories and essays have appeared in The Atlantic MonthlyThe Chicago TribuneGlimmer TrainThe New York TimesOne StoryPlayboyPloughsharesThe Southern Review, and in several anthologies, including New Stories from the South and Best New American Voices. He is a winner of the Playboy College Fiction Contest, the RopeWalk Fiction Chapbook Prize, the George Garrett Fiction Award, the Matt Clark Prize, and the Alice White Reeves Memorial Award from the National Society of Arts & Letters. He teaches in the MFA program at the University of Central Florida and lives in Orlando with his wife and daughters. Currently, he is at work on a novel, also forthcoming from Simon & Schuster.
