Cultural Memory and Social Crisis in African American Music: Evolution of a Multi-Disciplinary Process By Eric Wright: A talk about the relationships between memory and identity in Africana Studies scholarship. To show how social memory theory can be used to understand trends in African American music through the incorporation of concepts from social trauma theory. How music informs the major narratives of African American identity and provides temporal “sites of memory” in which personal and group identities are celebrated in quasi-ritual settings such as juke joints, house parties, nightclubs, and churches.
