A tale of two reducciones: Exploring the bioarchaeology of colonialism contextually in north coast Peru

Megann Phillips is a Ph.D. student at UCF whose research focuses on the bioarchaeology of Andean Peru. She is particularly interested in relationships between biological stress and age at death in this region, as survivorship research can shed light on diverse health and mortality outcomes related to social differences and environmental adaptation. This presentation explores the long-term consequences of stress experiences observed from skeletons at two colonial period reducciones (Spanish-engineered indigenous settlements) in north coast Peru. Results suggest that sex and ecogeographic location might have played an important role in individuals’ resilience after biological insults. This new information enhances contextual understandings of diverse indigenous experiences during the colonial period.
