Liz Matera is an accomplished performer and educator who retired from the military in 2017 after a twenty-seven year career as a clarinetist in The United States Marine Band: The President’s Own. The daughter of one of Iowa’s legendary instrumental music educators, after completing her bachelors degree in music at The University of Iowa, Liz taught in the public schools of Maquoketa, Iowa before winning the highly competitive audition for a spot in the USMC band. Over the course of her career, she performed in venues all around the world, for five U.S. Presidents, and for countless heads of state and visiting dignitaries and ceremonial events. Also during her assignment to the USMC Band, she earned both her masters and doctoral degrees in performance from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., studying with Sidney Forrest. She now lives back home in Bettendorf, IA with her husband, MGySgt Steven Matera, USMC, Ret. (trumpet), and their son, Robert.
