National Security and Intelligence: A Focus on the Yom Kippur War (1973)

Tuesday, March 16, 2021 noon to 1 p.m.

This presentation, co-sponsored by Academic Engagement Network, the Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence, and the School of Politics, Security, and International Affairs, will focus on intelligence issues and the Yom Kippur war.

The Israeli government and military were caught by surprise on October 6, 1973 by the sudden attack by the Egyptian and Syrian armies. Questions have arisen as to how whether and how the large buildup of forces preceding the attack went undetected and how the Israeli government and military responded to early warnings. The speaker will address the ongoing controversy about this intelligence failure and the consequences for Arab-Israeli relations.

Professor Uri Bar-Joseph is professor emeritus in the Department for International Relations of The School for Political Science at Haifa University. He is the author of several books on the intelligence failure of the Yom Kippur War among other subjects and is the winner of the Israeli Political Science Association Best Book Award for The Watchman Fell Asleep (SUNY Press). His book The Angel: The Egyptian Spy who Saved Israel (HarperCollins) is the winner of the National Jewish Book Award (History, 2016) and was selected as the Best Intelligence Book of 2017 by the American Association of Former Intelligence Officers. More recently, Professor Bar-Joseph co-authored Intelligence Success and Failure: The Human Factor, published by Oxford University Press in 2017.
