The UCF Center for Ethics and Department of Philosophy will host Mark Satta (PhD, JD) for a live digital conversation around ethics, science and technology, and knowledge, in which he will discuss his work on epistemic trespassing. Epistemic trespassers have competence in one field but pass judgment on matters in another field where they lack competence.
Epistemic trespassing can make it difficult for lay audiences to tell who the real experts are and what the truth is. In this presentation, Dr. Satta will discuss epistemic trespassing by expert witnesses in courtroom trials and argue that there are interrelated legal, epistemic and moral reasons why expert witnesses should be careful not to engage in epistemic trespassing on the stand. Dr. Satta will also use epistemic trespassing by expert witnesses as a way to illuminate the distinction between legal, epistemic and ethical reasons.
