Improving Health and Health Equity: Nursing as a Catalyst for Change with guest lecturer:

Regina Cunningham, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN
Chief Executive Officer, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
Adjunct Professor and Assistant Dean for Clinical Practice,
University of Pennsylvania, School of Nursing

Nurses are uniquely poised to drive the health equity transformation – and every nurse can meaningfully contribute to this vision. This timely presentation will be grounded in the recent National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine report on The Future of Nursing: 2020-2030 Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity. As a member of the committee that wrote the report, Dr. Cunningham will share the committee’s vision of achieving health equity built on strengthening nursing capacity and expertise.

Nurses have substantial and often untapped expertise to help people and communities to access high-quality health care. Contextual factors influencing health outcomes will be discussed and inspirational exemplars of nurses driving change on this front will be presented.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify two key drivers of health inequity in the U.S.
  2. Discuss the role of social determinants of health (SDOH) on health outcomes.
  3. Discuss specific approaches to strengthening nursing capacity and expertise in addressing health equity.
  4. Provide two examples of actions nurses can take within their work settings to address social determinants of health among the populations they serve.

Attendees will earn 2.0 nursing contact hours.
